The Brief
Our brief on this project was to design a neo-classical house for our clients with a central hall and a classical plan and a large room where the family could “do everything in”. The clients vision was for a house that looked as if it had been there for the last hundred years.
The Challenge
One of the many challenges of this project was how to locate the building in the landscape in order to maximise views to the north and sunlight to the south. This was solved by placing the main public rooms to the front of the building, such as the drawing room and the dining room, rooms that would be used in the evening and placing the large kitchen which would be used every day in the southwest corner to maximise sunlight throughout the day. Another challenge was to make the house look as though it had been there for hundreds of years, this was done by using traditional construction method and with an efficient super-structure which results in external walls being thicker than in a standard new build house.Back to Projects
