The Brief

The brief for Thomas Robinson Architects was to extend a typical single storey, linear plan cottage to create almost 50% more accommodation for a young family.

The Challenge

The challenge on this project was to reconcile a one half storey extension which was necessary to meet the accommodation needs of the brief with the single storey cottage without losing the character of the building. The solution was to place the extension perpendicular to the existing building and to soften it by introducing a semi-circular end (a vernacular form often found in buildings of the Scottish countryside). This semi circular end houses the main living area space. We took our clues from the vernacular of the original  building and the local area, used natural materials and details. The result is a building that flows well, satisfies the clients spacial requirements and fits into the landscape well. This building has been much admired.
