the project

This project involved the redevelopment of a former school building in Killearn, a rural Stirlingshire village, into a vibrant popular community centre. It combined the early Victorian traditional architecture of the existing building with a contemporary architecture design for a new entrance foyer to make the building more welcoming and appealing for the community.

How we worked

The detailed brief obtained by a community consultation exercise identified that flexible space, abundant storage and good toilet and kitchen facilities were critical. A sketch design process and a series of meetings led to the evolution of a design that fulfilled these wishes and created a building that is useful and beneficial to the whole community.

Success of the project

The finished community centre is well used and well liked in Killearn and used even by surrounding villages. It offers versatile spaces in a warm and economically viable environment for the use of the whole community.
