Designing new houses and hotels and renovating country homes across Scotland’s Highlands and Islands, and remote rural North East locations brings pleasure and challenge in equal measure.
It’s a challenge we relish. Over our many years in practice, we have honed how our architecture service works in these most remote of Scottish regions. Director Tom Robinson’s blog about building on Scottish islands offers an insight into some of our projects in Skye, Jura, Islay, Raasay, Lewis, Bute, Arran and Coll. This includes managing procurement of services and materials, and frequent trips across the sea to meet with clients and project managers.
Our architecture across the Scottish Highlands includes sporting lodges, newbuild country houses and charming contemporary seaside houses, and sensitive renovation of listed historic homes – on which our conservation expertise comes into essential play. There are hotel projects of various kinds, and public buildings such as the visitor centre at Braemar, and an industrial-style public hub on the Isle of Bute. We also create newbuild traditional croft style dwellings on the islands and have sensitively extended Highland Victorian lochside homes on the mainland.
The development and future-proofing of farming architecture also plays a part in our north of Scotland architectural projects. We have overseen island holiday homes being created out of bothies and barns, and farmhouses brought up to date without being spoiled for 21st-century living, meaning warmth, style, comfort, and space – all with sustainable approaches and energy conservation at their heart.
It seems glib to say that every project is different – but it’s true. And that’s what gives us the most pleasure, working out for each Highlands and Islands or North East Scotland project what it is that will make it a great success.
