Enquire nowThis is a project that at its essence is about preserving a rural clutch of buildings in a beautiful coastal location on the isle of Mull. While the plan is to remove an unsuccessful and dilapidated house and build a sustainable 4-bedroom home in its place, the historic barns around it will be preserved. The general feel of an attractive and in-keeping island cottage settlement will remain.
The new plans will enable a way of living that flows far better, giving far greater connection between the buildings and the outdoors. Light will be brought in, seamless patio and garden access will be created, and the wonderful views over to the sea highlighted.
Our aim at all times is to sensitively redevelop this Inner Hebridean cottage into a form suitable and appropriate for the surrounding context. Due to the advance disrepair of the existing house, redevelopment by way of demolition and re-construction of the new more energy-efficient home is the best proposal. The existing adjacent barn structures will be renovated to ensure their longevity.
Materials for the new house will fit easily with the island aesthetic by way of slate roofing and simple white render. It will also have traditional fenestration patterns and will flow well into outdoor spaces, as well as to the existing barn buildings. There will be a pleasing change of roof height from the focal main house’s living space to a connected outbuilding which will house the kitchen and have an open-trussed ceiling, giving a rustic and traditional feel.
The sloping topography informs the design, with entrance at an upper level. Here, at the west elevation, an inviting entrance will welcome visitors. A boot room will provide a much-needed place to leave outdoor wear, before quickly and simply descending to the key bright open-plan living spaces looking south. Upstairs, the master bedroom will also maximise the view to the sea.
The owners will benefit from a new orientation of the house whose main living area and key internal focus will be an exceptional ground-floor living space facing south with easy access to a sheltered patio area, and better access to the garden.
This project is currently at planning stage, but we envisage it to be an extremely successful redevelopment of a coastal site with many charming aspects. Those features will remain in place and the new building will fit in seamlessly and give the whole plot new vigour. The whole will then have the chance to stand the test of time, as well as provide the owners with a comfortable and pleasing home and garden in a beautiful West Coast island spot.
