Lochside Home in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

the project

This is a spectacular site on a lochside in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park for a sensitively designed new four-bedroom home. Our clients wanted entertaining guests to be a priority for the design of this home.

Our challenges were the steeply sloping site in a clearing of the woods. While it is accessed from a main road, the brief also stipulated that the owners wished to feel completely a part of the wild landscape and to maximise the spectacular 360˚  views of the water and mountains.

How we worked

We decided that the best views would be from first-floor level so that’s where we have placed the main public spaces. This allows for those all-encompassing views and all-day summer light to be enjoyed.

This upper living floor is almost entirely glass, which is shaded by the deep overhanging eaves of the roof. These protect from overheating and solar glare, while still allowing a long and wide outlook.

The zinc roof fits perfectly with the modern rural feel of the property. Yet local materials are also a priority. The ground floor is constructed with robust stone walls – using a local whinstone, and gives a feel of the house being securely anchored to the land. It offers a pleasing solid contrast to the light construction of the first floor.

Bedrooms are on the ground floor, and each has access to a deck. The deep recesses in the stone wall for the bedrooms give a bit of privacy from the neighbouring rooms, while still allowing people to sit outside their room and read a book or enjoy the sunlight.

“This new lochside home is in a stunning national park location – all living areas are on the first floor to maximise enjoyment of the spectacular views.”

Success of the project

This project is ongoing. We envision a perfect compact waterside property; a perfect holiday home with an outstanding back- and front-drop that would work equally well as a place to entertain as it would for a landscape artist to reside and paint the ever-changing views.
